I had been looking over proposal after proposal seriously falling in love with romance all over again. And was giving all those guys out there who hired a professionals to help execute their plan, a virtual high five.

Then I stumbled across Heather with The Yes Girls Events, and my jaw literally hit the floor. This woman is seriously a genius. I love the concept and the niche market she has created. Proposal Planning. Heather and her team have been featured on the Today’s Show & Travel Channel.

Most guys I know have a hard time putting what they want to do for the love of their life, into play, and that is where Heather and her team step in. They do everything from helping them customize their plan to making it all come to life.

Since this is such a different thing that most guys haven’t thought of, I wanted to do a interview with Heather to get you all familiar with her and her business. She is so super sweet and incredibly talented, and I’m thrilled to have her featured today.

A: Heather, tell us a little about yourself?

H: It’s safe to say I am a huge romantic at heart.  I thrive on being around “love inspired” moments like engagements, wedding and anniversaries. I realize life isn’t perfect but honing in on the moments you never want to forget is important. I am a small business owner, a military wife to my fun-loving husband- Kyle, a vanilla latte addict, a lover of the mountains, outdoors, country music, and eye-catching fonts, and a fur-mom to my two energetic pups- Tanner and Ellie.

A: I love that you specialize in helping plan the perfect, memorable proposal, what made you focus on proposals and how did you get into it?

H: Since High School I knew I wanted to start my own company in the wedding planning industry but it was during college at CU Boulder (during multiple internships and wedding assistant jobs), that I thought about marriage proposal planning. I loved to hear stories of  how couples got engaged. When I graduated in 2008, I decided to research if there were any resources for propsal planning in the States. I particularly wanted to help guys personalize their proposal to their own relationship. I didn’t find a proposal planning company but I did find that there were thousands of searches a month for marriage proposal ideas. That’s when I decided to take a leap of faith and create the first personalized marriage proposal planning company.

A:  What has been your favorite proposal so far?

H: Besides my own? 🙂  I know I should have a quick answer for this one but honestly, I always feel attached to the current proposal I am working on. If I had to chose, one of my favorites that was pretty elaborate in detail was when Tim, our client, had an enormous sand sculpture created for Jess who is an avid surfer. It was a huge sand wave with personal memories carved into it including their first date at the huntington beach pier, suitcases with the names of the places they’d traveled, and her dream job as an Orca trainer. For the final piece, Jess found another sand wave, this time with a sand sculpted Tim proposing on a surfboard  in the wave’s barrel. After she said “yes”, there was a beach picnic made up of favorite foods from their first date. The two of them celebrated and enjoyed the sunset. It’ truly was AMAZING!

A: What advice do you have for guys just starting their planning process?

H: It’s always best to start brainstorming proposal ideas while you are in the process of ring shopping. We’ve noticed a trend. Once a gentleman gets the ring, he tends to want to propose right away so it’s good to have a plan in process. Spontaneity is a great characteristic but not ideal for a proposal when that moment is meant to be full of thoughtfulness. Have a plan brewing before you purchase the ring. That means considering personal budget for the proposal too. We use this analogy often: “You wouldn’t cook a five course meal and serve it on a paper plate.”

A: Do you have a timeline when it comes to planning proposals? How far in advance do you like beginning your process?

H: We definitely have a diligent process down and a network of quality vendors that give our clients discounted rates. We love to have a month to plan the proposal but many times we have a week or two to help with everything from coming up with personalized proposal ideas, contracting vendors, to ensuring all goes seamlessly the day of the proposal.

A: What role do you play in the planning process?

H: It varies per client but our most popular proposal package includes two custom proposal ideas and full planning: booking vendors such as photographers, venues, videographers, florists, musicians and creating custom projects . Our clients remain completely involved throughout the proposal planning process, after all it’s still his proposal. However when it comes to day of, our clients are able to enjoy the moment and just concentrate on the words they want to say to their future fiancee because we have handled the details and site setup for that moment.

A: What are your favorite wedding trends, or those that you wish brides would leave behind?

H: Oh that’s a good question! Favorite wedding trends: lush outdoor venues, lace, gray groomsmen suits, and custom backdrops behind sweetheart tables. One trend I’ve noticed that can either be spot on or just a bit messy is the mix and match of bridesmaid dresses. As my mom always says, “sometimes less is more.” I have to remind myself of that too.
